Key Highlights & Takeaways

  • Discovery and user research save hundreds of engineering hours later in the product cycle.
  • Design systems are living tools that align design and engineering around shared tokens.
  • Optical alignment and typographic rhythm separate polished products from generic prototypes.
  • Continuous usability testing uncovers high-impact micro-friction before launch.

1. The Discovery & Research Phase

Great design never begins in Figma. It begins with listening. Before creating a single rectangle, designers must uncover the underlying problem, business constraints, and core user motivations.

At Drishti, we conduct qualitative user interviews and competitive teardowns. We build empathy maps and define primary job stories ('When I [situation], I want to [motivation], so I can [expected outcome]').

Golden Rule of UX

Users do not buy features; they buy better versions of themselves accomplishing tasks with minimal cognitive load.

2. Information Architecture & User Journeys

Information Architecture (IA) defines how content is structured, labeled, and discovered across an application. If users can't find a feature within 3 clicks, the feature effectively does not exist.

Map out sitemaps and flowcharts before drawing screens. Keep primary navigation flat, minimize nested dropdown menus, and provide clear orientation cues so users always know where they are.

3. Wireframing & Low-Fidelity Testing

Low-fidelity wireframes strip away colors, typography, and imagery, allowing the team to focus entirely on layout, hierarchy, and interaction mechanics.

Creating quick clickable prototypes in Figma allows rapid user testing without emotional attachment to polished visuals. Iterating on wireframes takes minutes; refactoring production code takes days.

4. Visual Identity & Design Tokens

Once the layout is proven, we introduce high-fidelity visual design. This is where brand personality comes alive through purposeful color palettes, font pairings, spatial scales, and iconography.

Every visual element should be mapped to a design token: brand colors, text sizes, radii, and elevations. This ensures pixel-perfect harmony and seamless synchronization with frontend code.

  • Follow optical alignment rather than pure geometric alignment for icons and badges.
  • Maintain strict 4px/8px spatial grids for predictable vertical rhythm.
  • Ensure WCAG 2.1 AA contrast compliance for all text and interactive UI elements.

5. Building a Scalable Design System

A design system is not just a UI kit; it is the shared language between designers and developers. Components must be modular, state-driven (hover, focus, active, disabled, loading), and well-documented.

By standardizing components—buttons, inputs, cards, dialogs—teams eliminate redundant design cycles and can launch new features with consistent visual polish.

6. Usability Testing & Engineering Handoff

Before shipping, conduct 5 to 7 moderated usability tests. Observe where users hesitate, which labels confuse them, and where interactions feel sluggish.

Handoff to engineering should include responsive layouts, edge-case states (empty data, long strings, error toasts), interaction specs, and direct token references.

Design as an Ongoing Discipline

Product design is never truly finished. Post-launch analytics, heatmaps, and user feedback continually illuminate opportunities to refine micro-copy, reduce drop-offs, and elevate satisfaction.

Embracing a structured design process transforms subjective opinions into measurable business outcomes.
